Which airport should we fly into?

In the winter, when we are sailing the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas (STT) is very practical with many flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York, Atlanta, Charlotte and more.  You can also fly into the BVI (EIS) from San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU) and a few other airports.

In the summer, depending on where we are, we will help you in the choice of airport.

Do we need passports?

Yes.  Unless you ask us to cruise only the US Virgin Islands – which can be a lovely vacation – you need a passport for everyone, even the children and the babies.

How do I get from the airport to the yacht?

There are taxis that will take you to the location where we are docked: Compass Point Marina.  We will give you the exact directions and a telephone number in case there are last minute questions.  We can also schedule a cab who will wait for you at the airport with a sign.  The fare is your responsibility, it will run about $20 per persons

What is you cancellation and rescheduling policy?

The cancellation and rescheduling policy is detailed in the contract.  The refund depends on how far in advance of your trip you cancel or reschedule.  Under certain circumstances you can reschedule with no penalties.  Refunds vary from 80% to none.

What should we bring?

We will send you a “Welcome to Beagle Knot” letter about 30 days prior to your trip with lots more information.  But here is a short list: Passport, Cash, Credit and/or Debit Cards, Bathing suits (at least 2), Changes of clothes, probably no more than one per day. if you get easily sunburned, consider a light long sleeve and long leg pants, such as the L.L.Beans shirts.  Toiletry, Meds, Sunscreen, Sun glasses and hat. Consider having a lanyard for both of these.

Shoes for getting here and back (flip-flops) and one to go hiking. On the boat we are generally barefooted.

If you have them:  Mask, snorkel and fins.  Tip: Bring an old pair of socks to wear inside the fins, women tennis socks work great. It will keep you from developing blisters. Waterproof camera

We supply:  Towels, both bath towels and beach towels.  Bath soap, leave-in hair conditioner, new scrubby for each guest.  Gloves if you wish to help in the sailing maneuvers.

Does Beagle Knot have air-conditioning?

Short answer: No.

Long answer:  Honestly, it is not needed, we guarantee it.  It is an interesting question though.  Ten years ago, a person going sailing would never have asked the question; A/C was only found on Mega Yachts.

There are several reasons it is not needed:

The weather.

The weather in the Virgin Islands from December to May is idyllic. The temperature rarely goes above 86ºF (30ºC) in the afternoon and dips to the low 70’s (low 20’s C) at night.  A moderate to strong breeze keeps things cool.  Now, the sun is hot, so what we say about sun-screen and sunglasses still applies.

The boat.

In the process of purchasing a boat in 2012, we listed the features we wanted.  Ventilation was at the very top of the list.  The ventilation on Beagle Knot is great; and just in case, we have put additional fans in the cabins and we have wind-scoops, parachute like gizmos that channel air into the cabins.  The white hull also keep the boat interior cooler than the beautiful but heat absorbing dark hulls.

Location, location, location.

For a host of reasons too numerous to list here, we do not recommend/like staying overnight in marinas, the only place that would – may-be – justify the use of air conditioning.  On a mooring or at anchor, the boat orients itself into the wind for maximum ventilation.  In a marina you are often in a windless area, and the boat is oriented to the dock, hence the boat may or may not be facing the wind.

If we have not persuaded you that you do not need air conditioning, we have many very capable colleagues in the charter business that do have A/C on their boat.  Unless connected to the electric grid in a marina, all of them must run their generator to provide A/C.  Some generators are quieter than others, none are totally silent.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a reservation?

  1. Check the Beagle Knot calendar on the Schedule tab to see which available time slot would be suitable for your party.
  2. E-mail us (we like e-mail because we are not always where the telephone works) to tell us the dates at which you would like to visit and give us the information about your group and the type of service you wish. (see Rates).
  3. We will put a hold on the dates you choose and answer any questions you may have.  Once you are ready, we will send you an offer in the form of a contract.  If it suits you, you sign it and make the required deposit.  We will give you options on how to do that but the easiest will be for you to send a check made out to Beagle Knot Charters, LLC directly to our bank in the USVI.
  4. We keep the hold on your dates for three weeks.  Then we re-opened those dates to other potential customers.  That should give you plenty of time to 1) book your plane tickets, 2) ask us for modifications (date changes, etc.) on the contract, sign it, and send the deposit.
  5. Once your deposit has cleared, the time slot is totally reserved for you.
